Graphic designer
What is reasonable compensation for a graphic designer?
Training and experience matter here more than a credential does, since design rarely requires a license. What counts is a portfolio built over years, fluency across brand, print, packaging, and digital work, and the judgment to know which direction actually solves a client's problem. An owner who can run concept, revision rounds, and final production alone is worth more than one who still leans on outside contractors for finishing work.
Duties and time devoted spread across billable design hours and the unbillable hours that keep a studio alive: pitching new clients, managing a project queue, handling vendor relationships for print or fabrication, and reviewing the work of any junior designers or freelancers on retainer. A sole owner juggling creative direction, account management, and bookkeeping in the same week is doing several jobs at once, and each one has its own going rate among comparable studios.
What the business pays non-owner staff sets a floor, not a ceiling, for the owner's own wage, since the person setting creative direction and keeping client relationships intact typically carries more responsibility than any designer on the payroll. A studio with steady retainer income and modest staffing usually points toward a wage close to what a hired creative lead would command, with distributions layered on top once that baseline is met.
